This dissertation explores the vocal experience of cisgender and transgender individuals in Portugal. The term “trans” is used here to refer to people whose gender identity differs from the sex assigned at birth, including trans women, trans men, and non-binary individuals. Voice constitutes a central marker of social and gender identity and can be a source of incongruence and psychological distress (e.g., dysphoria) when misaligned with one’s affirmed identity. However, few studies have examined this topic in an integrative way, and only one such study has been conducted in Portugal. A total of 82 cis and trans participants took part in this study, which compared their vocal experiences, including voice identification, perceived incongruence, and vocal dysphoria. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires and an expressive writing task. Results showed that trans participants—particularly trans women— reported significantly higher levels of vocal incongruence and dysphoria than cis participants. The same pattern was observed for voice identification, with trans women reporting lower identification with their voices compared to all other groups. The positive association between vocal incongruence and dysphoria suggests that these dimensions are interrelated, reflecting parallel experiences of discomfort and misalignment between voice and gender identity. No significant differences were found between groups in quantitative measures of writing, nor associations between vocal experience (as assessed by questionnaires) and expressive writing. However, a significant interaction between group and gender emerged for writing speed, with trans women tending to write at a slower pace than other groups. These results highlight the importance of voice as an identity marker and underscore the need for greater clinical and scientific attention to the vocal experiences of trans populations. The study contributes to the advancement of the literature by linking vocal experience and expressive writing—dimensions and methods rarely integrated, particularly within the Portuguese context.
