| dc.description.abstract | This thesis investigates the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in pharmaceutical supply chains (PSCs), focusing on current challenges PSCs are facing, adoption levels, perceived benefits in regard to costs and drug availability and barriers to implementation. The study was guided by four research questions addressing the extent and areas of current adoption of AI, its impact on cost efficiency of PSCs and on drug availability, as well as risks and future outlook. Research was done, integrating literature review with an online survey of professionals working in pharmaceutical supply chain roles. The survey provided a sample of 111 participants. It gave insights into how AI is currently used, perceived benefits stemming from implementation, and which are the barriers and risk that continue to limit adoption. The findings show that AI adoption within PSCs is already widespread, with most common areas affected being regulatory compliance, logistics, manufacturing and inventory optimisation. Respondents expressed great optimism on how AI is improving drug availability and cost efficiency. They also provided an optimistic outlook for the future, however also highlighting barriers such as uncertainty about return on investment, budget concerns and regulatory challenges, all of which need to be addressed if firms are to increase adoption. The study contributes to academic discussion by highlighting under researched financial and cultural barriers and by emphasising the growing importance of forecasting and potential for sustainability. For practice it highlights need for clear business cases, regulatory guidance and effective communication and education within organisations to enable simpler AI adoption. | |
