Os instrumentos utilizados incluíram a versão portuguesa das Graded Chronic Pain Scale Revised (GCPS-P), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale Reduzida (RSES-5) e Peer relationship subescale of the PROMIS Pediatric Profile.
Chronic pain in adolescents is an increasingly emerging public health problem in Portugal and worldwide, with significant physical, emotional and social repercussions. The main objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between the severity and impact of chronic pain and self-esteem, and whether the quality of peer relationships mediates this relationship in adolescents living in mainland Portugal. The study included a sample of 865 adolescents aged between 13 and 16 years, who were part of the PainNoPain study. The instruments used included the Portuguese version of the Graded Chronic Pain Scale Revised (GCPS-P), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale Reduced (RSES-5), and the Peer Relationship Subscale of the PROMIS Pediatric Profile. The results showed that more severe levels of chronic pain, severity and impact are associated with lower levels of self-esteem, partially mediated by the quality of peer relationships. Mediation was particularly evident in groups with bothersome and high-impact chronic pain, that is, higher levels of pain severity and impact were associated with poorer quality peer relationships, which in turn was related to lower levels of self-esteem. These results reinforce the importance of peer relationships as a protective factor in adolescents with chronic pain, suggesting the need for interventions that integrate psychosocial perspectives and promote support networks.
