| dc.description.abstract | On April 28, 2025, some areas of Portugal, including the municipality of Amadora, experienced a short-term electricity blackout. The disruption lasted only a few hours, but it marked an unusual moment of social interruption in a very digital and urban society. The research examines the social and emotional experiences of adolescents who were of the ages of 14 to 18 in Amadora in response to this event. The research recognized feelings not merely as personal psychosocial lived experiences but as social pattern that is formed by daily social life. It analyzes how family settings, migration heritage, community settings and organizations trust influenced young peoples' emotional narratives during the blackout. The study adopted a qualitative methodology drawing on twenty guided qualitative interviews carried out with teenagers in schools, football fields, churches and public spaces in Amadora. The study indicates that the event acted as a socio historic perspective that exposed current social disparities rather than producing new ones. Adolescents from stable family networks described the event as a momentary inconvenience or a chance for connection. Anxiety related to insecurity and lack of information was reported by teenagers from economically vulnerable households. Migrant-background youth perceived the event through family histories of instability. The results also emphasized the crucial role of online social interaction in teenagers' daily lives. This thesis adds to the sociology of childhood and emotions in Portugal by indicating how temporary infrastructural disruptions may reveal structural inequalities in urban peripheries, offering real-world suggestions for enhancing community strength among teenagers in Amadora. | |
