| dc.description.abstract | This research examines how an approach grounded in Primary Health Care (PHC) can serve as an effective strategy to address health inequalities in Portugal. Health inequalities were therefore explored through a multidimensional lens, addressing its key domains, beyond the economic conditions of the patient, such as the childhood environment and development, family situation, housing and working conditions, education levels, and engagement in risk behaviours. Findings suggested that not only were the poorer more exposed to harmful settings that led to ill health, but also that these individuals found stronger barriers to accessing health services, perpetuating a vicious cycle of limited opportunities, deeper poverty, and worsening health conditions. A dataset gathered through a random sampling method was provided by the Loures-Odivelas Local Health Unit (ULSLOD), which encompasses one of Greater Lisbon’s poorest municipalities (Loures), to provide further empirical data on the association between the variables above. This data was collected at the end of June 2025 and included 180,791 patients, excluding those with no registrations. Overall, the findings supported the PHC as a means of reducing health inequalities, thereby validating the research question. Accordingly, the author recommends the inclusion of economic vulnerability as a positive discrimination criterion for the allocation to a Family Health Team and the creation of community intervention teams that address the most vulnerable regions of the country. | |
