This article analyses Italian parliamentarism between 1848 and 1938, from the Kingdom of Sardinia to the Kingdom of Italy, by examining the relationship between the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate in a longue durée perspective. It asks how parliamentary activity, recorded speech, and political vocabulary were distributed between the two chambers during the transition from restricted liberal parliamentarism to mass politics and Fascism. The study adopts a Digital History methodology based on transparency, reproducibility, and the sharing of code and derived datasets, using Python to analyse digitised official parliamentary records and to compare yearly sittings, word counts and selected political keywords. The findings show that the elected Chamber occupied a more central position in parliamentary life, meeting more often, producing more speech, and registering the vocabulary of mass politics, especially democracy, socialism and suffrage, more intensely than the appointed Senate. Over time, this divergence widened the gap between the two chambers and contributed to an institutional impasse, as the Chamber became increasingly exposed to mass politics while the Senate remained anchored in older forms of elite continuity. Fascism then compressed parliamentary contestation, closing the cycle that had begun in 1848.
