A tradição é contemporânea: Arquitetura vernacular na Serra do Caldeirão (Algarve)

Abstract

A arquitetura vernacular surgiu em meados do século XX como uma fonte de inspiração para inúmeros arquitetos. Ao longo da era contemporânea, as palavras arquitetura vernacular e local identificaram-se com uma tradição que poderia ser entendida, reutilizada e evoluída. Hoje em dia, o vernáculo e o tradicional são passados à lupa na tentativa de compreender quais são as técnicas, formas e materiais que podem ou não ser benéficas para as atuais construções de estética e cariz tecnológico. Há um grande número de proprietários e arquitetos que tentam recuperar as sensações de conforto e exclusividade, através da aproximação a um legado de histórias e imagens regionais. O habitat é o lugar onde todos os símbolos e sincretismos ganham vida e onde as expressões socioculturais se reúnem, espelhando a herança de cada habitante e da sua comunidade. Durante o trabalho de campo realizado numa pequena aldeia do sul de Portugal, houve a oportunidade de observar e trabalhar este tema diretamente com os habitantes. A partir desta experiência surgiram várias propostas para estudar o espaço habitado e a forma como ele define e condiciona as narrativas rurais. Qual é o impacto que o espaço construído tem nos seus habitantes? Como se identifica a tradição, o autêntico e o vernáculo? Qual é a expressão contemporânea do conceito vernacular?

Vernacular architecture emerged in the middle of the XX century as a source of inspiration for numerous architects. Throughout the contemporary era, the words vernacular and local architecture were identified with a tradition that could be understood, reused, and evolved. Nowadays, the vernacular and the traditional are put under a microscope to see what technics, forms, and materials can and cannot be beneficial in new stylist high technologic houses. There is a large number of homeowners and architects that try to regain the sensations of comfort and uniqueness by bounding to a legacy of regional stories and images. Habitat is the place where all symbols and syncretism come to life and where the socio-cultural expressions come together, illuminating the heritage of each dweller as well as the community. Long-term fieldwork carried out in a small village in the south of Portugal, allowed me to observe and work on this topic directly with the inhabitants. From this experience emerged several proposals to study the inhabited space and the way it defines rural narratives. What impact has of the built space on its inhabitants? How are tradition, authenticity and vernacular identified? What is the contemporary expression of the vernacular?
