Companion animals have increasingly assumed a fundamental role in the lives of many people, however the number of abandoned animals annually continues to be quite high. With the COVID-19 pandemic, humans spent more time at home and, consequently, with their companion animals. The literature shows that home confinement of individuals had a positive impact on their relationship with their animals. Therefore, this work aims to understand the relationship between the positive consequences regarding the maintenance of a companion animal during the COVID-19 pandemic and attitudes towards abandonment, through the quality of the relationship between individual and companion animal, and, in addition, it also aims to understand the role of being the main caregiver in the context of this model. For this, a quantitative study was conducted (n=573), with portuguese individuals, owners of dogs and cats. The results demonstrate that the positive consequences regarding the maintenance of a companion animal during the COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on attitudes towards abandonment and that this relationship can be explained by the quality of the relationship between the individual and the companion animal.por
