This study investigated how parasocial contact, a novel type of intergroup interaction, can promote cross-group friendships. Specifically, it analyzed the effects of positive and negative parasocial encounters, compared to control interactions, with Black German women on the propensity to establish cross-group friendships. Additionally, research examined whether anxiety and empathy served as mediators for the impact of good and negative parasocial contact on this willingness. Ultimately, it explored how positive and negative contact conditions affected the processing of parasocial interactions, encompassing both cognitive and affective dimensions. A total of 148 German volunteers were randomly allocated to one of three experimental groups: positive parasocial contact, negative parasocial contact, or a neutral control condition. The results indicated that the negative contact condition (compared to control) diminished the willingness to engage in cross-group friendship, heightened anxiety, and albeit marginally reduced empathy, whereas no significant differences were observed for positive contact (compared to control). Mediation analyses indicated that the adverse impacts of negative parasocial contact (compared to control) on willingness to engage in cross-group friendship occurred via increased anxiety and not empathy (albeit the coefficients were in the predicted direction). Finally, an additional exploratory analysis showed that negative parasocial contact evoked stronger emotional reactions (i.e., heightened affective responses) and interfered with the ability to process information clearly (hindered cognitive processing). Overall, results suggest that even brief exposure to negative parasocial contact was sufficient to evoke negative attitudes and emotions.por
