The high cost and high-risk characteristics of R&D investment bring a high degree of uncertainty to the development of firms. Some managers of firms, out of risk aversion, have a negative attitude towards R&D innovation, leading to a management dilemma of insufficient R&D investment. Based on the upper echelons theory, this thesis focuses on executives in Chinese high-tech companies as the object of study. It delves into the relationship between executive characteristics, executive incentives, and R&D investment, aiming to explore the paths and methods to increase corporate R&D investment from the perspective of executives. Using Chinese companies listed on the STAR Market, we conducted empirical research using panel data from 2019 to 2021, employing a pooled regression model and random effects model. The research results evidenced that R&D investment in high-tech companies is significantly positively influenced by the overseas experience of the chairperson and general manager and the education level of the top management team. Remuneration incentives have a significant enhancing effect on the relationship between the chairperson’s overseas experience and R&D investment. Equity incentives also have a significant enhancing effect on the relationship between the education level of the top management team and R&D investment. No significant correlation was found between executive academic experience, the number of female executives, the number of technical executives, executive political connections, and R&D investment in this study.por
