| dc.description.abstract | This work sets out to investigate how the informal digital learning that occurs through gameplay can complement and enrich the formal learning of history that takes place in a classroom setting. The dissertation explores the possibilities of historically informed and culturally specific video game design to enhance engagement, history knowledge, and cultural remembrance for younger generations of learners. Research begins with a strong foundation of analysis and integration of existing knowledge across game-based learning, history learning, and cultural heritage. On that groundwork, the study proposes a concept for a huge, sprawling historical game centred in Viriato, a warrior who was responsible for giving the Romans a headache in Iberia. The design proposes an open-world action RPG game that takes place at and around key places and times of a nation’s heritage, where the game player rebuilds history by exploring, analysing primary-source snippets, and acting like a historian (sourcing information, putting it into context with further analysis, and then verifying by further game dialogue/research). A proof-of-concept study further validates game design feasibility and educational value without necessarily doing full game development to see that a scaled version of this game design concept would be possible and of strong educational value for the intended learning community. | |
