“Affection is warmth” Cognição situada: A influência da temperatura no julgamento de alvos sociais

Abstract

A abordagem da cognição social situada sugere que as variáveis do contexto no qual indivíduos se encontram apresentam um impacto significativo na cognição e acção.. O conhecimento construído através da interacção com o ambiente físico poderá estruturar a representação conceptual de conceitos abstractos que adquirem significado metafórico. Assim, este trabalho procura explorar a metáfora “affection is warmth” sugerindo a existência de uma relação entre a temperatura e as relações sociais. Uma vez que a experiência subjectiva do afecto está tipicamente correlacionada com a experiência física do calor, torna-se pertinente questionar se a manipulação da temperatura do local onde se encontra o indivíduo vai influenciar positiva ou negativamente os julgamentos e impressões que este formar. Assim, este estudo pretende testar as seguintes hipóteses: (1) os julgamentos de figuras abstractas e de alvos sociais são mais positivos na condição em que a temperatura é quente e menos positivos na condição em que a temperatura é fria; (2) estes mesmos efeitos devem verificar-se apenas nos julgamentos relativos à dimensão social do alvo e não à dimensão intelectual. Em diferentes condições de temperatura (quente, fria e neutra) foi pedido aos participantes que avaliassem um conjunto de figuras abstractas neutras e dois alvos sociais, um descrito na dimensão social e outro na dimensão intelectual. Os resultados mostram, que no geral, os participantes fazem avaliações mais positivas em condições de temperatura quente do que em condições de temperatura fria, sugerindo a importância do papel da temperatura na percepção e julgamento social.

The approach of situated social cognition suggests that the context in which individuals are has a significant impact in their cognition and action. The construction of knowledge through the interface with the physical environment will be able to structure the conceptual representation of abstract concepts that acquire metaphorical meaning. Thus, this work aims to explore the metaphor “affection is warmth”, suggesting the existence of a relation between temperature and social relations. Considering that the subjective experience of affection is typically correlated with the physical experience of warmth, becomes pertinent to question if the manipulation of temperature of the place where the individual is, will influence the judgments and impressions that he’ll form about others around him. This study intends to test the following hypotheses: 1) judgments of abstract figures and social targets will be more positive under conditions where temperature is warm and less positive under conditions where temperature is cold; (2) this effect should only be verified for the judgments relative to social dimensions of the target and not to those related to intellectual dimensions. Under different temperature conditions (warm, cold and neutral) participants were asked to evaluate a set of neutral abstract figures and two social targets, one described in the social dimension and the other in the intellectual dimension. Results show that overall, participants’ evaluations are more positive under warm than under cold conditions, suggesting the important role of physical temperature in social perception and judgement.
