| dc.description.abstract | Participation in collective action is most often theorized as being driven by two separate appraisals: an emotions-based appraisal arising from beliefs that the situation is unfair (i.e., injustice appraisal), and a solutions-oriented appraisal based in beliefs that a group can change a situation (i.e., collective efficacy). However, rather than separating emotions- and problem-based pathways, collective action may be better understood through the intertwining of emotion and instrumental drivers. The present research applies kama muta and hope frameworks to further investigate the relationship between collective efficacy and positive emotions in motivating collective action. I surveyed U.S. American liberals over 18 years of age (N = 251) in the context of the movements against President Donald Trump’s current policies. As predicted, results showed that that both hope and kama muta mediated the relationship between collective efficacy and collective action intentions. Exploratory analyses also revealed that activist identification moderates the pathway between efficacy and kama muta, such that participants with greater identification experience greater kama muta and subsequently, collective action intention. Together, this provides evidence for the importance of positive emotions in motivating collective action towards social change, and creates a foundation for future research on emotions and collective action. | |
