| dc.description.abstract | Research suggests that youth placed in residential care (RC) present more psychological difficulties (e.g., internalizing and externalizing) than their peers, often related to prior experiences of maltreatment. Additionally, these difficulties seem to vary according to youth’s gender. Therefore, this dissertation aims to explore the associations between abuse and neglect and psychopathology in youth placed in RC, using a multi-informant approach, as well as to analyze the moderating role of gender in these associations. This study included 155 youth in RC homes (12-17 years old, M = 14.89; 57.4% female), their primary caregivers in care and the respective care workers. Care workers completed The Child Maltreatment Severity Questionnaire, and youth and their primary caregivers in care completed The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. The results revealed that only physical and psychological abuse was related to internalizing symptoms reported by youth and caregivers, and to externalizing symptoms reported by youth. The multigroup analysis revealed significant moderating effects of gender, specifically regarding neglect. These findings provide additional knowledge on the role of maltreatment in psychological adjustment in RC, and regarding gender differences in these associations. Based on these findings, we reflect on evidence-based and targeted interventions that meet the mental health needs of these youth, considering their maltreatment experiences and those individual differences. | |
