This study is made based on an analysis to the empirical studies published on the Journal of the American Taxation Association (JATA) and the National Tax Journal (NTJ), in the years of 2004, 2009 and 2014. Its aim is the characterization of tax investigation, more specifically the analysis of characteristics shared by the investigators and the articles published in both journals. The following variables were analyzed and taken into account: year of publication, author, the author’s affiliated organization/institution and continent of residence, type of authorship, the author’s own contribution, most cited articles, popular themes of investigation, methodology and data collection methods. It was possible to conclude that, in 2004, 2009 and 2014, the number of articles published on the NTJ diminished. On the other hand, even though JATA has published less research articles than NJT, it registered a decrease in the number of published articles from 2004 to 2009 and an increase from 2009 to 2014. The results of the study confirm that tax incentives is the most searched field of study and databases are the most used data collection method. When it comes to the investigators, they tend to work in groups instead of working individually, with the majority working with one other investigator only. Most investigators are predominantly from North America.por
