Competitiveness factors of sustainable aviation: Insights from industry experts on its characteristics, risks and benefits

Abstract

Sustainability is growing as a decisive factor in the aviation industry, as the sector is faced with changing policies and emergence of new technologies and innovations, both in large and small-scale aviation. Therefore, the main purpose of this thesis is to explore sustainable aviation by examining how industry stakeholders define it, identifying its key characteristics, analyzing the principal factors that influence competitive advantage in the specific context of sustainable aviation, and investigating the challenges and barriers to its implementation. In order to answer these questions, 11 semi-structured interviews to individuals from different categories of the aviation industry sector were thematically analyzed, with the goal of gathering a global view of sustainable aviation. By combining a multi-perspective that ranges from traditional commercial aviation (airlines, airports, regulators, researchers) to the new emerging small-scale sectors (AAM, UAM, drones, evtols). Findings suggest that sustainable aviation was perceived as an approach to minimize the environmental impact of aviation by combining characteristics such as innovation in technology, lifecycle approach, more efficient operational practices, improvement in infrastructures and evolving business models. The competitiveness factors of sustainable aviation identified are connected with the pressures faced by the industry, mainly pressure from alternative transport modes, increased regulatory and consumer demands for sustainability, and the current necessity to adapt through technological and operational innovation. The results provided key insights for the future business models based on the opportunities identified in sustainable aviation particularly connected with areas related with infrastructure, data and risk mitigation. Sustainable aviation comes with different challenges but also opportunities to develop new technology and sustainable driven business models. This transformation will depend on a combined set of efforts by the different players of the aviation industry.

A sustentabilidade apresenta um crescimento como fator decisivo na indústria da aviação, visto que o setor atravessa um momento de mudança de políticas e aparecimento de novas tecnologias e inovações em aviação de larga e pequena escala. O principal objetivo desta dissertação é explorar a aviação sustentável, examinando como os stakeholders a definem, identificando as suas principais características, analisando os fatores que influenciam a competitividade no contexto da aviação sustentável e investigando os desafios e oportunidades da sua implementação. Para responder a estas questões, 11 entrevistas semiestruturadas a participantes de diferentes categorias na indústria da aviação foram analisadas tematicamente, com o objetivo de obter uma visão global sobre o tema da aviação sustentável, utilizando estas diferentes perspectivas que combinam contributos desde aviação comercial (companhias aéreas, aeroportos, reguladores, investigadores) até aos novos setores em aparecimento e desenvolvimento da aviação de pequena escala (AAM, UAM, drones, eVTOLs). Os resultados sugerem que a aviação sustentável foi percepcionada como uma abordagem para minimizar o impacto ambiental da aviação, combinando características como a inovação tecnológica, operações mais eficientes, melhoria das infraestruturas e evolução dos modelos de negócio. Os fatores de competitividade estão ligados às pressões enfrentadas pelo setor, nomeadamente a concorrência de modos de transporte alternativos, o aumento das exigências regulatórias e dos consumidores em matéria de sustentabilidade, e a necessidade atual de adaptação através da inovação tecnológica e operacional. Os resultados forneceram também informações cruciais para futuros modelos de negócio baseados nas oportunidades identificadas na aviação sustentável, particularmente nas áreas relacionadas com infraestruturas, dados e mitigação de riscos. A aviação sustentável apresenta diferentes desafios, mas também oportunidades para desenvolver novas tecnologias e modelos de negócios sustentáveis. Esta transformação vai depender de um conjunto de diversos fatores por parte dos diferentes intervenientes da indústria da aviação.
