| dc.description.abstract | This research investigates the impact of the post-pandemic emigration ‘Japa’ phenomenon on various sectors whilst focusing specifically on Nigeria’s Information Technology (IT) professionals emigrating to the United Kingdom. Utilizing secondary data derived from the UK Home Office, OECD, the World Bank, and the Bureau of Statistics of Nigeria, the study examines the migration of professionals in the Information Technology industry from the year 2020 to 2025 in a push and pull framework. The study examines the migration phenomenon from a multi-theoretical prism of state fragility, neoliberalism, and post-colonial theory. These theories assist in understanding the emigration dynamics of a nation with a weak state apparatus, demanding global labor markets, and transhistorical dominations. The data analyzed suggests that the United Kingdom’s economy has eased the worrying skill gaps in software development, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence, while Nigeria has suffered in terms of brain drain, innovation, and shifts in digital transformation. The study also focuses on the unconventional dynamics of remittances and diaspora engagement and asks the question on whether the gained remittances compensate for the institutional and economic deficits incurred. The study demonstrates the case of Nigerian IT specialists emigrating to the UK in the framework of the global political economy and illustrates how structural inequalities perpetuate cycles of dependence and the emerging digital economies’ heightened state of fragility. | |
