| dc.description.abstract | The present study explores multiple mechanisms through which values influence sociocultural adaptation among Polish immigrants in Norway, the country’s largest immigrant population. Drawing on Schwartz’s theory of basic human values and Gardner’s socio-educational model of second language acquisition, this study examined how immigrants’ personal values, their perceptions of the value climate in the host society, and the fit between these two predict sociocultural adaptation. This relationship is examined through integrative and instrumental motivation as parallel mediators, and host language proficiency as a subsequent mediator. A sample of 216 Polish immigrants living in Norway participated in the study. Employing a quantitative design, data were collected through an online self-report questionnaire and analyzed using serial mediation models. The analyses confirmed the hypothesized indirect links underlining the crucial role of integrative motivation and host language proficiency as mediators in the adaptation process. Personal endorsement of self-transcendence values predicted sociocultural adaptation via integrative motivation and host language proficiency, whereas perceiving the host society as endorsing self-enhancement values predicted poorer sociocultural adaptation through decreased integrative motivation and host language proficiency. Contrary to expectations, lower fit in conservation and self-transcendence was associated with better sociocultural adaptation. These findings offer an integrated framework for understanding how and through what mechanisms the relationship between values and adaptation occurs. | |
