| dc.description.abstract | Luxury in fashion has traditionally been associated with exclusivity, craftsmanship and heritage, representing status and prestige accessible to few. However, these traditional notions are being challenged as Younger Generations, particularly, Generation Y (Millennials) and Generation Z, redefine what luxury means. Their values emphasize personal identity, experiential consumption and social and environmental responsibility, reflecting broader cultural and technological changes. This study employs a qualitative methodology, based on in-depth semi-structured interviews with 18 participants from different generations, to explore their perceptions, values, behaviours and motivations related to luxury. For comparison, responses from Generation X were analysed to identify changes and continuities in luxury perception and consumption patterns. Findings indicate that Younger Generations prioritize experiential and personalized luxury, digital engagement and ethical considerations. Importantly, some values and perceptions remain consistent across generations, such as the importance of quality and heritage. Moreover, even older participants increasingly adopt digital channels for information and engagement with luxury brands. Differences across generations and genders reveal nuanced shifts in consumer behaviour and expectations for luxury brands. The study reveals a notable transformation in the meaning of luxury, demonstrating how traditional values coexist with Younger Generations’ increasing demand for exclusivity, personalization and experiential engagement. By highlighting both generational continuities and shifts, the research provides critical insights into the evolving relationship between consumers and luxury brands, emphasizing the need for the industry to continue to innovate while honouring its legacy to remain culturally and economically relevant in a rapidly changing global market. | |
