Lean Six Sigma and industry 4.0: An analysis of the pharmaceutical industry

Abstract

We live in an era in which companies are subject to a highly competitive environment. For this reason, businesses are constantly trying to reinvent their processes. It is in this attempt to improve them that companies adopt organisational transformation initiatives, such as the Lean Six Sigma (LSS) methodology. Similarly, they often adopt cutting-edge technologies associated with Industry 4.0 (I4.0). In order to optimise the benefits of both concepts, in recent years they have begun to be combined in different industries. However, in the particular case of the Pharmaceutical Industry, it emerged that there was a certain difficulty in realising how both concepts fit individually and together in the workflow of the industry's companies. Thus, the aim of this research was to study the application of the LSS approach and the I4.0 model by organisations belonging to the Pharmaceutical Industry, not only, but also, through an industrial analysis in Portugal. It was therefore found that the best way to assess the degree of usage of LSS and I4.0, in an organisation, is by analysing its elements separately and that various combinations of the two concepts in other contexts can serve as an example for their application in the Pharmaceutical Industry. It was also possible, through a questionnaire that analysed responses from 16 organisations in the industry, to ascertain that there is still a lot of room for progress when it comes to adopting both concepts and that elements of I4.0 such as Interoperability or BDA seem to potentialise LSS.

Vivemos numa era em que as empresas estão submetidas a um clima de grande competitividade. Por esta razão, estas procuram constantemente reinventar os seus processos. É nesta tentativa de melhorá-los, que as empresas adotam iniciativas de transformação organizacional, como é o caso da metodologia Lean Six Sigma (LSS). De igual modo, adotam muitas vezes tecnologias de última geração que estão associadas à Indústria 4.0 (I4.0). Com vista a otimizar os resultados de ambos os conceitos, nos últimos anos começou-se a conjugar a sua existência em diferentes Indústrias. Contudo, no particular caso da Indústria Farmacêutica, verificou-se que havia uma certa dificuldade em perceber como ambos se encaixavam individualmente e em conjunto no funcionamento dos processos das empresas da indústria. Assim, o objetivo da presente investigação passou por averiguar a aplicação da abordagem de LSS e do modelo da I4.0, por parte das organizações pertencentes à Indústria Farmacêutica, não só, mas também, através de uma análise industrial em Portugal. Verificou-se, então, que a melhor forma de perceber o grau de uso de LSS e I4.0 é através da análise dos seus elementos separadamente e que diversas combinações entre os 2 conceitos, em outros contextos, podem servir de exemplo para ser aplicadas na Indústria Farmacêutica. Foi possível ainda, através de um questionário que analisou as respostas de 16 organizações da Indústria, apurar que existe muita margem de progressão no que toca à adoção de ambos os conceitos e que elementos da I4.0 como, por exemplo, Interoperabilidade ou BDA parecem potencializar a LSS.
