| dc.description.abstract | As a small, semi-peripheral economy based on the banking sector within the eurozone, Portugal is a particularly relevant example of how external dependence, high indebtedness and post-crisis austerity have exposed the labour market to financial and institutional pressures. With that in mind, this thesis analyses the role of the financialisation of workers in the precariousness of the Portuguese labour market, especially in the post-crisis period of 2010. The study integrates macroeconomic, institutional and social perspectives to understand how this phenomenon, which first appeared in Portugal following its integration into the eurozone, contributed to changes in income distribution, the behaviour of non- financial corporations and labour relations in Portugal. The analysis combines seven quantitative indicators from AMECO, Eurostat, the OECD, the Bank of Portugal and INE with qualitative evidence obtained from official documents and academic studies. The results show that post-2009 austerity and the 2011-2014 Economic Adjustment Programme were not only cyclical responses to the crisis, but mechanisms through which financialisation further spread in Portugal. Under the need to restore the confidence of external markets and the sustainability of public accounts, the imposed financial discipline reinforced and institutionalised an already fragile labour market. The findings confirm that the growth of financial logics, motivations and actors perpetuated the structural precarity of work through wage stagnation, job insecurity and the erosion of collective bargaining. | |
