The growth of passive investing and the difficulty for managers to beat the index after costs keep alive the question of active management’s true value. This dissertation compares active and passive funds between 2016 and 2025 across the United States, Europe, and Emerging Markets from the perspective of a dollar-denominated investor, and incorporates tail-risk metrics such as Value at Risk and Expected Shortfall alongside traditional measures. Additionally, the 2020 pandemic and 2022 inflation crises are further examined to assess how each of the strategies reacted to high-volatility periods. The methodology uses daily data from twelve funds (one passive ETF and three active ones per region). The evaluation combines traditional metrics, like Sharpe and Sortino, with tail metrics validated by backtesting. Descriptive results show that active management outperformed passive on a risk-adjusted basis, with decreasing strength from the US to Europe. However, formal testing revealed that only two funds generated statistically significant alphas, limiting the evidence of widespread manager skill. Most active funds recorded lower tail risk than the ETF due to their lower betas. The study also revealed a clear crisis rotation effect: the most resilient fund in 2020 was the most fragile during the 2022 inflation crisis. In conclusion, there is no single answer. Passive investing is a default in Europe, while active management retains value in less efficient markets and in style diversification, subject to the survivorship bias inherent to the sample.
