Between Dharma and the Museum Wall: Sacred buddhist art in the context of the global art market

Abstract

The study focuses on the line between cultural, ethical, and market processes that shape the contemporary perception of Buddhist art. In this work, you will find basic information about the culture and philosophy of Buddhism in the context of the topic, as well as information about the transformation of sacred meaning into aesthetic or investment value, how ritual objects enter the art market, and the associated processes of desacralization, aestheticization, and museification. The practical part of the study offers an analysis of selected auction catalogs, museums, and galleries, in particular, how they present Buddhist objects outside or within their religious context, which contributes to the secularization of meaning.

O estudo centra-se na linha entre os processos culturais, éticos e de mercado que moldam a perceção contemporânea da arte budista. Neste trabalho, encontrará informações básicas sobre a cultura e a filosofia do budismo no contexto do tema, bem como informações sobre a transformação do significado sagrado em valor estético ou de investimento, como os objetos rituais entram no mercado de arte e os processos associados de dessacralização, estetização e museificação.
