| dc.description.abstract | The 2022 FIFA World Cup held in Qatar, generated an intense global media discourse surrounding the concept of sportswashing. Although the term had previously been employed, the tournament prompted an increase of media articles on the topic. Despite a lack of consensus on its definition, sportswashing is generally understood as the deliberate use of sport as a political tool to improve the image and reputation of a state. In recent years, Gulf states have significantly increased their investments in the sports sector, which has been met with allegations of sportswashing, coming primarily from the Western world. These accusations are most often directed at non-Western and non-democratic states. This thesis explores the differences in the media narratives surrounding sportswashing presented by the media in Gulf countries and those in the West. In particular, the United Kingdom, as most accusations of sportswashing are made by the British press. This research investigates how media outlets n different regions interact with the concept of sportswashing. This thesis aims to assess how cultural norms and geopolitical ambitions can influence how a topic is addressed and communicated. It intends to evaluate which aspects of information are highlighted or minimised, shaping how the topic is communicated. The thesis argues that cultural and geopolitical context significantly impact the media narrative that is produced and how the overall message is conveyed. | |
