This research explores the socio-cultural impacts of short-term rentals on local neighborhoods in Lisbon, particularly focusing on resident-tourist relationships and the preservation of local identity. With the increase of platforms like Airbnb, Lisbon's traditional urban fabric has been reshaped, creating both economic opportunities and cultural challenges. While the influx of short-term rentals has brought increased revenue and business opportunities, it has also disrupted community cohesion and local identity, especially in historic neighborhoods such as Alfama and Bairro Alto. Residents face rising property prices and feel increasingly detached from their communities as they grapple with the commercialization of local culture. This study, through quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, offers an in-depth analysis of these dynamics and proposes strategies for more sustainable urban tourism management, balancing economic benefits with the preservation of cultural heritage.
