The impact of COVID-19 pandemic and the war situation on the Portuguese banking sector

Abstract

The present dissertation explores the Portuguese banking sector in the last years, especially the socioeconomic consequences of a Pandemic and a War. This way, the sector performance and its structure were studied, considering the specific variables of each bank and macroeconomic indicators. The empirical investigation over 28 banks which had activity in Portugal in the period 2010-2022, through a liner regression using panel data, concluded that the inflation has a significant impact on the performance and the structure of the sector. Moreover, other variables significant too are the bank size and the GDP growth (only for the banking sector structure). Even so, considering the negative values of the GDP growth rate at the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic and the War in Ukraine, and later the rapid and uncontrolled increase in the inflation rate, the sector remained moderately concentrated without major changes in competition between banks.

A presente Dissertação explora o setor bancário português nos últimos anos, especialmente as consequências socioeconómicas de uma Pandemia e uma Guerra. Desta forma, a performance do setor e também a sua estrutura foram estudados, considerando variáveis específicas de cada banco e indicadores macroeconómicos. A investigação empírica sobre os 28 bancos que tiveram atividade em Portugal no período de 2010-2022, por meio de uma regressão linear utilizando dados de painel, concluiu que a inflação tem um impacto significativo na performance e na concentração do setor. Além disso, outras variáveis também significativas são a dimensão do banco e o crescimento do PIB (apenas para a estrutura do setor bancário). Ainda assim, considerando os valores negativos da taxa de crescimento do PIB no início da Pandemia do COVID-19 e da Guerra na Ucrânia e, posteriormente, o rápido e descontrolado aumento da taxa de inflação, o setor manteve-se moderadamente concentrado sem grandes alterações na competição entre os bancos.
