| dc.description.abstract | In a speech in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, the then recently appointed president Emmanuel Macron promised to return the cultural objects taken during the French colonial period to their countries of origin. An important milestone in the issue of colonialism, the speech and the consequential report commissioned about the matter by the French president, fueled the expansion of the debate surrounding the restitution of cultural objects removed during the colonial period. An interesting point of debate that was raised was the instrumentalization of the restitutions as a "soft power" policy; taking into account the complexity of both the issue of return of items that withdrawals during colonization and the conceptualization of "soft power", this paper looks into the matter to explore if the act of restitution is indeed part of a "soft power" policy or just business as usual. | |
