| dc.description.abstract | Despite growing sustainable consumer awareness, fast-fashion consumption continues to rise. Given this discrepancy between intention and behavior, the use of sustainable labels may encourage consumers to buy sustainable clothing. The present study analyzed the effect of the sustainable label (i.e., nudge) on the intention to purchase sustainable clothing items, whose relationship may vary depending on the consumer’s individual characteristics (e.g., age, gender, academic qualifications). Using a 2x2 experimental design (nudge x individual characteristic), clothing items with or without a sustainable label were presented to participants residing in Portugal. The results reveal that the presentation of clothing items together with the sustainable label decreased the intention to purchase the respective items. The nudge, however, had a significant effect on the perceived price and future intention to purchase sustainable items: sustainable clothing items marked with a sustainable label were associated with a higher price and a lower future purchase intention than sustainable clothing items without a sustainable label. These results suggest that sustainable labels may decrease purchase intention, highlighting the importance of adjusting communication strategies to encourage sustainable consumption. | |
