This research aims to produce contributions to the study of causal attributions and attributional styles of immigrants with high academic degrees. The research intents to survey the attributions, while mechanisms for prediction and control of the social experience of individuals, associated with academic trajectories often characterized by major constraints reducing the possibilities of integration and school success. Under this view, the academic success of immigrants acquires characteristics of a phenomenon like "Black Swan", that is, marginal, atypical. Understanding that school success (or failure) is a process (multidimensional and multifactorial) and not just a mere quantifiable outcome measured by statistical indicators, it was chosen a qualitative approach and the interview as a technique for collecting data, in an attempt to better capture the subtleties of the complexity and uniqueness of each individual pathway. The study seeks to analyze and understand specifically how the attributional profiles vary according to some differentiation factors such as the level of parental education, capturing the relationships between those profiles, adaptive capacities and academic success. The target group consists of immigrants and descendants of immigrants, from lusophone countries, with tertiary educational level (university degree or other qualifications beyond that level) achieved in the portuguese education system. The results point to the predominance of internality for success attributions. However, individuals with parents with higher qualifications make attributions to “family education” and / or to the stimulus of family members and others.
