A profissão de contabilista em Portugal: Evidência empírica em alunos e profissionais

Abstract

A imagem pública de uma profissão condiciona a sua credibilidade, valor, reputação e desenvolvimento futuro. Por outro lado, a importância da imagem das profissões manifesta-se também aquando da escolha da carreira profissional por parte dos alunos em geral. Deste modo, é fundamental dinamizar a investigação neste tema com a finalidade de contribuir para clarificar e melhorar a imagem da profissão pelo público mundial. Este estudo pretende, assim, contribuir para o conhecimento sobre a profissão de contabilista em Portugal. Neste sentido, foram distribuídos inquéritos aos grupos sociais com interesse na profissão de contabilista. O tratamento estatístico incidiu sobre as respostas de 157 alunos do primeiro ano do curso de contabilidade, 78 respostas dos alunos do terceiro ano do mesmo curso, 412 respostas dos TOC e 105 respostas dos responsáveis financeiros das maiores empresas portuguesas. Conclui-se que a imagem do contabilista, em Portugal, é percecionada, principalmente, precisa e interessante. Sendo que, o interesse pela profissão relaciona-se de forma inversa com o seu grau de estruturação e isolamento. A contabilidade em Portugal encontra-se ainda, em relação a outros países, bastante focalizada em aspetos monetários e interessada nas funções tradicionais do reporte externo e controlo de custos. Se se atender aos resultados da relação do interesse da profissão com a estruturação e isolamento (dimensões principalmente patentes na contabilidade tradicional), verifica-se que se não for alterada a orientação da contabilidade para uma vertente mais estratégica e colaborativa, dificilmente se conseguirá aumentar o interesse pela profissão.

The public image of a profession affects their credibility, value, reputation and future development. On the other hand, the importance of the perception about this job is also expressed when students have to make choices about their careers. Thus, it is essential to develop the research in this area to clarify and improve the worldwide perception about this job. This study aims to increase the knowledge about accounting jobs in Portugal. Thus, surveys were distributed to social groups concerned about accounting jobs. The statistical analysis has focused on the responses of 157 university students of the first year of accountancy, 78 responses of the third year university students of the same course, 412 responses of chartered accountants and 105 responses of financial managers of the largest Portuguese companies. We have concluded that accountant's perception in Portugal is mainly accurate and interesting. Although, the interest about this job are inversely associated with company's organization and isolation. Accounting in Portugal is still more focused on monetary aspects and concerned in traditional functions such external reporting and cost control than other countries. Based on results of the relationship between interest, structuring and isolation of the accountant’s image (mainly patents dimensions in traditional accounting), it turns out that if the accounting job does not change to be more strategic and to have collaborative environment, hardly it will be able to increase the concern and the importance about accountanting jobs.
