O que te faz feliz?: A paisagem rural como lugar de permanência

Abstract

A construção da Barragem do Cabril foi um ponto de viragem para quem habita aquele território. Desencadeou mudanças no ecossistema ao nível da fauna e da Fora do vale do Zêzere e, transformou também os modos de vida e de ocupação daquele lugar. Ainda hoje é possível verificar uma panóplia de vestígios, associados à sua construção. O concelho de Pedrogão Grande e freguesia de Pedrogão Pequeno estão hoje mais perto e simultâneamente mais divididos. Não é apenas um muro de água que os separa. A crise climática aliada a uma falta de gestão concertada entre estes dois territórios deixa-os vulneráveis a fenómenos com grande poder destrutivo do habitat, como os que a região presenciou no ano de 2017, data em que se sucederam os mega incêndios de Pedrogão Grande. A catástrofe foi também um sinal de alerta do estado de abandono generalizado do território rural. Este ensaio reflete sobre a importância em habitar territórios de baixa densidade no século XXI, e, tomando como ponto de partida o contexto português, procura chegar a um entendimento sobre aquilo que os torna em lugares de permanecência. O projeto propõe a utilização de uma pré-existência originada pelo processo de construção da barragem e testa hipóteses do habitar: é uma proposta para uma forma de habitar em comunidade numa encosta. Explora-se ainda na proposta o efeito do jardim produtivo, não como atividade produtora de sustento a uma sociedade neo-rural, mas como promotora de bem-estar, lazer e subsistência para os habitantes deste território.

The construction of the Cabril Dam was a turning point for those who live in that area. It triggered changes in the ecosystem in terms of the fauna and flora of the Zêzere valley and also transformed the way of life and occupation of that place. Even today, it is possible to see a range of traces associated with its construction. The municipality of Pedrogão Grande and the parish of Pedrogão Pequeno are now closer and at the same time more divided. It is not just a wall of water that separates them. The climate crisis combined with a lack of concerted management between these two territories leaves them vulnerable to phenomena with great potential for habitat destruction, such as those that the region witnessed in 2017, when the mega fires of Pedrogão Grande occurred. The catastrophe was also a warning sign of the widespread state of abandonment of the rural area. This essay re!ects on the importance of inhabiting low-density territories in the 21st century, and, taking the Portuguese context as a starting point, seeks to reach an understanding of what makes them places of permanence. The project proposes the use of a pre-existing structure originated by the dam construction process and tests hypotheses of habitation: it is a proposal for a way of living in a community on a hillside. The proposal also explores the e$ect of the productive garden, not as an activity that produces sustenance for a neo-rural society, but as a promoter of well-being, leisure and subsistence for the inhabitants of this territory.
