A breve história de um edifício pombalino: Análise das mudanças além-fachada no contexto das transformações urbanas

Abstract

A propósito do carácter perenemente incompleto das cidades e dos seus edifícios antigos, vincula-se o património construído à condição de palimpsesto. Com o objetivo de contribuir para um pensamento e intervenção mais informados, e que constituam um instrumento para alcançar o desenvolvimento sustentável das cidades, questiona-se Como se têm adaptado os edifícios antigos às mudanças sociais e económicas? e Como se relacionam essas adaptações com o contexto social e económico? Toma-se como caso de estudo um edifício pombalino para, a partir de uma análise de tempo longo, sobretudo com base em fontes arquivísticas, assinalar e sistematizar as alterações de que foi objeto, relacionando-as com as transformações do habitat urbano onde o edifício se insere. Conclui-se que as transformações do espaço doméstico são indissociáveis das transformações do habitat, reforçando-se a necessidade de estudar estas modificações em tempo longo para melhor identificar e responder aos desafios contemporâneos.

Regarding the perennially incomplete nature of cities and their ancient buildings, built heritage is linked to the condition of palimpsest. With the aim of contributing to more informed thinking and intervention, and constituting an instrument to achie- ve the sustainable development of cities, the question is how have old buildings adapted to social and economic changes?, and how do these adaptations relate to the social and economic context? A Pombaline building is taken as a case study to, from a long-term analysis, mainly based on archival sources, point out and systematize the changes to which it was the object, relating them to the transformations of the urban habitat where the building inserts. It is concluded that the transformations of domestic space are inseparable from the transformations of the habitat, reinforcing the need to study these changes over a long period of time to better identify and respond to contemporary challenges.
