Abstract: | Adjectives like tamper-proof, traceable, transparent, and confidential, among many others, are used
when referring to blockchain technology. In fact, due to these capabilities, one of the many potential
applications of this technology is in the field of digital forensics, where it could be used to preserve the
chain of custody of digital evidence. The chain of custody refers to the chronological documentation
that shows the seizure, custody, control, transfer, analysis, and disposition of physical or digital
evidence. By using blockchain to record and secure this information, the integrity and authenticity of
the evidence can be preserved, and the risk of tampering or manipulation can be reduced.
This thesis explores the applicability of blockchain technology in preserving the chain of custody
of digital evidence. It investigates how blockchain can enhance digital evidence's trustworthiness,
transparency, and immutability, thereby addressing the issues associated with tampering,
manipulation, and unauthorized access. The research examines existing blockchain-based solutions,
analyses their strengths and limitations, and proposes a framework for effectively leveraging
blockchain technology to preserve digital evidence's chain of custody. We named our framework as
“Eviblocks”. |
