Abstract

O Transtorno do Espectro do Autismo (TEA) é marcado por desafios na interação social e na comunicação. É central a esta discussão a intersecção entre atenção e teoria da mente, que se refere à habilidade de interpretar e compreender estados mentais alheios. Através de uma revisão sistemática, esta tese visa esclarecer como estes dois domínios cognitivos interagem em indivíduos autistas. Estudos têm demonstrado que os défices na atenção, especialmente a atenção voltada a estímulos sociais, estão intrinsecamente ligados a desafios na teoria da mente. Por exemplo, a dificuldade em focar a atenção nos olhos de outra pessoa pode influenciar a capacidade de interpretar suas intenções. Compreender esta relação é crucial, pois pode informar estratégias de intervenção mais eficazes e ajudar indivíduos com TEA a melhorar suas habilidades de interação. Esta tese não apenas sintetiza o conhecimento atual, mas também indica direções promissoras para pesquisa futura neste campo.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by challenges in social interaction and communication. Central to this discussion is the intersection between attention and the theory of mind, which refers to the ability to interpret and understand others' mental states. Through a systematic review, this thesis aims to clarify how these two cognitive domains interact in autistic individuals. Studies have shown that deficits in attention, especially attention directed to social stimuli, are intrinsically linked to challenges in theory of mind. For instance, difficulty in focusing attention on another person's eyes can influence the ability to interpret their intentions. Understanding this relationship is crucial, as it can inform more effective intervention strategies and help individuals with ASD enhance their interaction skills. This thesis not only synthesizes current knowledge but also points to promising directions for future research in this field.
