O papel das redes sociais online na visibilidade e compreensão da comunidade trans em Portugal

Abstract

As redes sociais online vieram alterar o contexto em que os movimentos sociais se inserem, assim como a sua forma de atuar na sociedade, dando-lhes mais visibilidade do que nunca e trazendo benefícios (e problemas) que seriam difíceis de atingir fora delas. Esta visibilidade tem consequências a vários níveis, nomeadamente no contexto offine, e na aceitação das pessoas que a eles pertencem. Esta dissertação pretende focar-se no papel que esta nova forma de comunicar tem, ou não, na luta pelos direitos LGBTQIA+, mais concretamente os direitos da comunidade trans, principalmente em relação à representação, compreensão e aceitação dos mesmos pela sociedade. Para observar este movimento nas suas potencialidades e dificuldades em Portugal, é importante definir os conceitos que o rodeiam, assim como contextualizá-lo legal e socialmente, com recurso a uma revisão de literatura. Posteriormente, através de uma análise de conteúdo temática, analisamos a presença online de um dos principais agentes que participam nos movimentos sociais – as associações formais e informais (plataformas digitais) – e tentamos perceber como estas utilizam a rede social Instagram para dar visibilidade e representação à comunidade pela qual lutam, e de que forma a mesma é recebida pelo público. Esta análise recorreu à escolha de 10 associações com diferentes objetivos, mas com um propósito comum, o de contribuir para a luta da comunidade trans e melhorar a qualidade de vida da mesma.

Social media have come to alter the context in which social movements operate, as well as their way of engaging with society, giving them more visibility than ever and bringing benefits (and problems) that would be difficult to achieve without them.This visibility has consequences at various levels, particularly in the offline context and in the acceptance of the people who belong to these movements. This dissertation aims to focus on the role that this new form of communication has, or doesn't have, in the struggle for LGBTQIA+ rights, specifically the rights of the transgender community, especially concerning their representation, understanding, and acceptance by society. To examine this movement in its potential and challenges in Portugal, it is important to define the concepts surrounding it and to contextualize it legally and socially through a literature review. Subsequently, through a thematic content analysis, we examine the online presence of one of the key players in social movements – formal and informal associations (digital platforms) – and try to understand how they use the social network Instagram to provide visibility and representation to the community they advocate for and how it is received by the public. This analysis involved the selection of 10 associations with different objectives but a common purpose, which is to contribute to the fight for the transgender community and improve their quality of life.
