Resumo: | This study explores the relationship between cultural differences and travel user-generated
content (UGC) and UGC’s effect on tourism destination image (TDI). The object is to
investigate whether there is a difference in the travel UGC posted on between the East and West
and whether that creates different TDIs between the two groups. This is done by analyzing the
content posted on Instagram by people from Asian and Western countries about Bangkok and
Paris. 1000 photos in total were collected from Instagram using relevant hashtags and coded
according to twenty different categories. Even though in the end the most frequents categories
for Asians and Westerners are mostly the same, their proportions varied and they clearly
highlighted different aspects of the destinations. In Bangkok Asians focused on tourism
facilities, Wat Arun and food, whereas Westerners posted about the urban landscape and a
couple tourist attractions and showed the natural side more. In Paris on the other hand, Asians
photographed the Eiffel Tower clearly the most, followed by regular buildings, restaurants and
art. Westerners were equally interested tourist attractions and regular buildings and gave more
of a casual view of the city while also presenting it as a metropolitan city. In conclusion, based
on the sample, travel UGC is slightly different in East and West which suggests that there are
different TDIs in the regions. |
