Atenção perante a (des)graça de outros: a relevância do contexto afectivo musical

Abstract

No geral, os estímulos negativos tendem a desencadear maior atenção do que estímulos neutros ou positivos. Neste estudo foi testada a possibilidade de a Atenção prestada a estímulos afectivos visuais diferir em função do Contexto afectivo (induzido pela exposição a distintos estímulos musicais). Sessenta e cinco participantes foram distribuídos aleatoriamente por três condições experimentais: exposição a um tema musical alegre; exposição a um tema musical triste; e ausência de estímulo musical (grupo controlo). Durante a exposição, os participantes visualizaram em simultâneo imagens afectivas positivas e negativas, sendo registada a Duração (da observação e da fixação) e o Número de fixações perante as imagens. Verificou-se que o Contexto afectivo musical afectou a Atenção perante as imagens. Os participantes fixaram mais vezes os estímulos negativos, sendo este efeito ampliado, também para a Duração da observação e Duração da fixação, na condição de tristeza; prestaram ainda uma atenção mais prolongada aos estímulos positivos na condição alegre, no entanto não se registaram diferenças quanto ao Número de fixações nesta condição. Estes resultados sugerem que o Contexto afectivo musical pode atenuar ou inverter os processos atencionais.

In general the negative stimuli tend to trigger more attention than neutral or positive stimuli. In this study the possibility that the Attention paid to emotional visual stimuli may depend on the Emotional context (induced by the exposure to distinctive musical stimuli) was tested. Sixty five participants were randomly assigned to three experimental conditions: exposure to a happy musical theme, to a sad musical theme or to a condition without music stimuli (control condition). During the experiment, the participants observed positive and negative emotional images simultaneously. The Duration (observation and fixation times) and the Number of fixations to the images were recorded. The results showed that the Musical context affected the Attention paid to the images: The participants looked more often to negative stimuli, and this effect was extended also to the observation length and fixed length, in the condition of sadness; in contrast, prolonged attention to positive stimuli occurred in happy condition, but there were no differences in the number of fixations between stimuli in this condition. These results suggest that Musical emotional context can attenuate or reverse attentional processes.
