quantitativo e outro qualitativo.
Bullying amongst teenagers is an ever growing phenomenon of extreme prominence. Associated to this phenomenon are the differences between genre and the issues of physical appearance, which are so important during this life stage. For that reason, the present work revolves around the subject of peer evaluation of bullying, specifically, the issues that concern genre and obesity/weight. Two different studies were conducted, a quantitative and a qualitative analysis. For the first one, a survey was adapted from three other different surveys, largely used in the study of bullying, and applied to a sample of 61 teenagers, ages 8 to 14. The results indicate significant differences between male and female participants in what concerns victimization, being that male participants presented a higher score on this subject. Furthermore, it is also shown that when it comes to weight related teasing behavior, boys resort more frequently to physical aggression while girls prefer the use of rumors and gossip. Older boys were, also, significantly more identified as aggressors, by other boys. For the second study, three focus groups were conducted with a total of 15 teenagers (10 girls and 5 boys), ages between 10 and 13. Content analysis confirmed the results found on the quantitative phase, although participants in this study (with some exceptions) argued that weight related bullying didn't exist. Nevertheless, they still commented on the consequences of this kind of behavior while proposing different interventions for it. This study contributes on the comprehension of this multifaceted phenomenon and highlights its main limitations and future investigation suggestions on the discussion section. |
