O impacto da barragem de Alqueva no turismo da região

Abstract

O turismo rural tem tido um papel fundamental em combater a desertificação e o envelhecimento da população das regiões, uma vez que permite diversificar as fontes de rendimento dos residentes e atrair os jovens e as suas ideias de investimento para estas localidades. O Alentejo interior foi muito afetado pelo afastamento dos jovens por falta de oportunidades e por isso, o crescimento do turismo rural que foi impulsionado pela Barragem de Alqueva e pela pandemia do Covid-19 foi sem dúvida um volte-face que permitiu à região criar novos postos de trabalho e ser novamente atrativa para as populações mais jovens. O objetivo deste estudo é o de perceber quais foram os impactos no turismo da região após a construção da Barragem de Alqueva e quais são as ações que ainda podem ser tomadas para continuar a desenvolver e dinamizar a região, promover as suas características únicas e atrair a população mais jovem. Concluiu-se que, apesar de muitas das ações estratégicas que foram propostas inicialmente para criar um cenário ideal de turismo na região não terem sido desenvolvidas, se verificou uma melhoria dos serviços associados ao sector e um crescimento do interesse por parte de turistas estrangeiros e nacionais pela região. Este crescimento só foi possível porque outras ações foram desenvolvidas e porque a pandemia Covid-19 alterou o tipo de procura no que toca a destinos de férias, passando a ser para localidades sem turismo em massa e com tradições, culturas, paisagens e atividades diferenciadas.

Rural tourism has played a key role in combating the desertification and ageing of the population of inland regions, as it makes it possible to diversify residents' sources of income and attract young people and their investment ideas to these localities. The inner Alentejo was greatly affected by an exodus of young people due to lack of opportunities and therefore the growth of rural tourism that was driven by the Alqueva Dam and the covid-19 pandemic was undoubtedly a turnover that allowed the region to create new jobs and be attractive again to younger populations. The aim of this study is to understand what were the impacts on tourism in the region after the construction of the Alqueva Dam and what are the actions that can still be taken to continue to develop and boost the region, promote its unique characteristics and attract the younger population. It was concluded that, although many of the strategic actions that were initially proposed to create an ideal tourism scenario in the region were not developed, there was an improvement in the services associated with the sector and an increase in interest on the part of foreign and national tourists in the region. This growth was only possible because other actions were developed and because the Covid-19 pandemic changed the type of demand for holiday destinations, moving to locations without mass tourism and with traditions, cultures, landscapes and differentiated activities.
