The United Nations (UN) Organization has been a key-player in providing updated statistical data that allow analysing the evolution of several countries and regions in the world through a truly universal database with important implications to policy-making. However, these indices must be critically assessed: what do they measure, after all? Based on the UN- proposed indices to measure Human Development and Gender Inequalities, the situation of the Portuguese-speaking African Countries since the beginning of the new millennium will be analysed with the purpose of identifying tendencies and to reflect on the conquests and/or setbacks. |
