In the art markets, the superstar artists are often the ones that reach higher prices at auction and have more mediatic coverage. With such a prominent position, the merit and talent of these artists is often questioned. However, the art markets are structured by many implicit rules that ensure its balance and serve to filter who is allowed to reach stardom. This begs the question, what are the conditions to stardom and what has an artist to go through to reach it. Through the general analysis of the rules of the markets, the literature on superstars and human brands, and the specific analysis of the carers of artists Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami, this dissertation establishes that talent, luck and personal branding play fundamental roles for the superstar status. Furthermore, it finds indication that bending or breaking the rules might be accepted and even contribute to artists fame and success, once they are already part of the system. |
