Os pendentes da Península Ibérica na joalharia do séc. XVI

Abstract

A joalharia é uma das mais antigas artes decorativas existentes. A atração por materiais raros e belos, o desejo pelo embelezamento do corpo, o estatuto social e o poder sobrenatural atribuído a determinadas gemas é intrínseco à natureza humana. Estudar o adorno conduz assim à melhor compreensão da realidade de cada época da história humana. Este estudo debruça-se sobre os pendentes, uma tipologia de joalharia que se desenvolveu muito ao longo do Renascimento a partir de novas modas, tecnologias, materiais e temáticas. Incidimos sobre a joalharia da Península Ibérica, território, à data, com uma importância geopolítica fulcral para o desenvolvimento da sociedade e da arte de uma Europa paradoxalmente global e individualista, tendo sido o motor para novas realidades sociais e culturais, potenciadas pela descoberta de novos caminhos marítimos para territórios já conhecidos e pela descoberta de mundos totalmente novos. Neste contexto, interessou entender em que medida os valores artísticos europeus se mantiveram num panorama de tão grande diversidade cultural, inerente ao encontro entre o Ocidente e o Oriente e quais as consequências na arte da joalharia. O magnífico legado histórico constituído pelos pendentes do século XVI foi alvo de adulteração e reformulação ao longo dos séculos. Descrevem-se por isso alguns modelos que nos chegaram intactos, mas abordam-se outros que apesar de descontextualizados na origem ou no tempo, são representativos para este estudo, porque feitos à semelhança dos originais e porque demonstram o interesse das gerações vindouras por tais objetos.

Jewellery is one of the ancient decorative arts that we know. The men attraction for the rare and the beautiful materials, the desire to enrich the human body with preciouse materials, the social status, and the superstition enforced by the power that men find in certain rocks and gems, it is something that became part of human nature. Study jewellery leads therefore to a better knowledge and understanding of the reality of each period of the mankind history. This study is about pendants, a kind of jewel that knew a great development during the Renaissance, along the XVI century, following new styles, technology’s, materials and themes. It was given focus to the jewellery of the Iberian Peninsula, a territory, at the time, with an enormous geopolitical importance for the society and the art development, in a global but individualist Europe. It became the motor towards a new social and cultural reality, enhanced by the discovery of new maritime routes to lands already known and by the discovery of entirely “new worlds”. In this context, it was important to understand in what way did the European art values stands on along such a cultural diversity panorama supported by the meeting between East and West, and what were the consequences of it in the jewellery. This magnificent historic legacy that the pendants of the XVI century are, suffered several reformulations along the ages, according to the fashion changes. That’s why in the present study, we described some of the models that reached us intact, and were made some approaches to others, that although they disrespect either origin or time, are representative, because they were made with similarity to the originals and they show the interest of the futures generations in those type of objects.
