A influência da temperatura na percepção e julgamento dos outros e do próprio

Abstract

O estudo da percepção e julgamento social, no âmbito de uma abordagem clássica da cognição social, fundamenta-se nos pressupostos do processamento da informação, que sugerem que as representações que os indivíduos têm do mundo físico e social que os rodeiam são abstractas e amodais, ou seja, são independentes do contexto em que se formam e se recuperam. Ao longo dos anos, a influência que outros factores exercem na cognição humana tem vindo a ser reconhecida e explorada, nomeadamente, a emoção, a motivação, a par de factores contextuais do ambiente externo, físico e social, que passaram a ser encarados como factores intervenientes nos processos cognitivos. É nesta abordagem, da cognição social situada, que sugere que a natureza da cognição e do comportamento social é fortemente influenciada pela acção do organismo sobre o contexto e deste sobre o organismo, que o presente trabalho se enquadra. Com base neste enquadramento, colocamos como objectivo explorar o papel da temperatura do meio ambiente onde o percepiente social se insere, nas impressões e julgamentos que realiza em relação aos outros e a si próprio. Mais concretamente, sugerimos que a percepção e os julgamentos dos indivíduos acerca de alvos físicos e sociais e, ainda, acerca de si próprios, são mais positivos quando estes se encontram numa temperatura quente do que numa temperatura fria. No geral, os resultados apoiam, ainda que parcialmente, esta proposta e mostram que em condições de temperatura quente os julgamentos de outras pessoas e dos contextos físicos envolventes são mais favoráveis do que em condições de temperatura fria, reforçando, assim, a importância de considerar o papel das variáveis contextuais na cognição e julgamento.

The study of perception e social judgment, under a classical approach of social cognition, is based on the assumptions of information processing, which suggest that the representations which individuals have of the physical and social world that surrounds them are abstract and amodal, and that they are independent of the context in which they are formed and retrieved. Throughout the years, the influence that other factors exert in human cognition has been acknowledged and explored, namely, emotions, motivation, along with contextual factors of the physical and social environment, ,which are currently recognized has intervenient factors in cognitive processes. It is within this approach, of socially situated cognition, that suggests that the nature of cognition and social behavior is strongly influenced by the action of the organism over the context and of the context over the organism, that this work is framed. Within this framework, our goal is to explore the role of the temperature of the environment where social perception takes place, in the impressions and judgments performed regarding others and him or herself. Specifically, we suggest that the perception and judgment of the individuals regarding physical and social targets and, even themselves, are more positive when they are in a warm temperature than in a cold temperature condition. The overall results partially support our proposals by showing that in warm temperature conditions the judgments about other individuals, and about the general features of the surrounding physical environment are more favorable that in cold temperature conditions. These results reinforce the importance of considering de role of contextual variables in cognition and judgment.
