Memória e escala - o caso da frente-mar de Ponta Delgada. ETLA Escola Tecnológica do Litoral Alentejano

Abstract

Com a construção do Porto Artificial de Ponta Delgada no final do séc. XIX e a sua conclusão em meados do séc. XX, a cidade viu-se mais protegida do mar, e como consequência surgiu a avenida marginal, que veio marcar uma nova fase de desenvolvimento da cidade, dando azo à criação de uma nova frente. A partir do séc. XX foram traçados uma série de planos urbanísticos para a cidade de Ponta Delgada, planos que na sua maioria nunca passaram à prática, mas que foram indispensáveis para se debater o urbanismo da cidade. Entre os vários planos criados, destaca-se o do Arq. João de Aguiar, uma vez que este foi o primeiro plano a sugerir a implantação de uma avenida marg inal, bem como a implantação de edifícios na margem norte da avenida. A implantação da avenida marginal ao longo de todo o contorno da cidade, veio alterar a sua linha de costa, ganhando terreno ao mar, e consequentemente fazendo surgir na sua frente uma série de terrenos urbanizáveis. É nestes terrenos, e ao longo de toda a margem norte da avenida marginal, que a cidade vinha testemunhar a construção de uma série de edifícios que acabariam por alterar a silhueta da cidade, subvertendo a sua escala arquitectónica e urbanística. Ao alterar a escala da cidade, a paisagem construída da cidade modificou-se e consequentemente a memória do que outrora tinha sido a cidade alterou-se. Esta investigação propõe-se assim, a analisar a nova frente-mar da cidade, erguida no séc. XX e XXI, de modo a perceber a sua relação com a cidade antiga , bem como a relação entre os vários edifícios que a compõem.

With the construction of the Artificial Port of Ponta Delgada, at the end of the 19th century and its completion in 20th century, the city found itself more protected from the sea, and as a result has come up the promenade, which came to mark a new city development stage, but this time facing the sea. From the 20th century were set a series of development plans for the city of Ponta Delgada, mostly of the plans never came to practice, but were indispensable to discuss the urban planning of the city. Among the various plans created, there is one, projected by the architect João Aguiar, that was the first plan to suggest the implementation of a promenade, as well as the implementation of buildings on the north bank of the avenue. The implementation of the promenade along the entire outline of the city, has changed its shoreline, through landfills, and consequently creating new building land. On this land, and all along the north bank of the promenade, the city was witnessing the construction of a series of buildings that would eventually change the silhouette of the city, subverting its architectural and urban scale. By changing the city scale, the built landscape of the city has changed and therefore the memory of what had once been the city has changed. This essay aims to analyze the new sea-front of the city, built in the 20th and 21th century, in order to understand their relationship to the old town as well as the relationship between the various buildings that comprise it.
