Imagens e estereótipos da sociedade portuguesa sobre a comunidade chinesa. Interacção multissecular via Macau

Abstract

Os contactos luso-chineses tiveram início no século XVI, via Macau. Foi também neste século que os chineses principiaram a imigrar para as regiões vizinhas. Mas apenas na segunda metade do século XIX podemos falar da existência de uma diáspora chinesa no mundo. Uma das constantes dessa diáspora é a sua centragem nas actividades comerciais. No século XX a Europa experimentou um fluxo crescente de imigração chinesa. Portugal não fugiu à regra e desde os anos vinte começou a receber imigrantes com essa origem. Após 1974-75 a imigração chinesa para o território português aumentou em grande escala. Hoje a comunidade chinesa é uma das comunidades mais representadas a nível nacional no país. Tal facto tem gerado impactos sociais e económicos e construído imagens recíprocas diversas. Este estudo pretende investigar quais as imagens que a sociedade portuguesa forma dos imigrantes chineses e como as forma. Pretende ainda comparar as representações actuais com as representações geradas no decurso de quatro séculos e meio de contactos luso-chineses, visando proceder ao balanço entre continuidade e inovação. Por último, pretende avaliar se nessas imagens existem sentimentos de discriminação e de xenofobia. Para isso, irá apoiar-se em várias dezenas de entrevistas conduzidas na Área Metropolitana de Lisboa. Embora os entrevistados não pretendam constituir uma amostra representativa da população portuguesa, os seus depoimentos são elucidativos acerca das imagens e sentimentos nutridos no nosso país em relação aos imigrantes chineses.

The interactions between the Portuguese and the Chinese through Macau began in the 16th century. It was also during this period (but with a significant increase during the 19th century) that the first Chinese migration took place to the bordering regions. However, only in the second half of the 20th century is one able to identify the existence of a Chinese Diaspora, a flow mainly focused on the commercials activities and directed to Europe. Portugal was in that migration route and since the early of the century, but mainly after 1974-5, it has begun to receive Chinese migrants in a large scale. Today, this community is one of the largest national migrant groups in the country. Alongside with the social and economical impacts of their presence, we have been assisting to the emergence of different social/cultural images/representations. Hence, this study has as its main aims: to investigate those representations as a socially constructed process, form within the Portuguese society; to compare the continuity or disruption of that process throughout the last 4 centuries of Portuguese/Chinese relations; to evaluate the (in) existence of xenophobia and discrimination. Several interviews were conducted in the Lisbon metropolitan region and even though the number does not constitute a representative sample of the Portuguese population, their statements are, nevertheless, elucidative as to the images and feelings towards the Chinese migrants
