Resumo: | In the last 20 years, the global economic picture has seen some significant
changes with emerging and developing economies outgrowing the traditional powers, a
trend projected to continue throughout the 21st century. As they make their way into the
top rankings of the world’s largest economies, many changes will come in the process.
With respect to language, what will this mean for English as the world’s global lingua
franca? It has served as the common language in international business for quite some
time but with China poised to replace the USA as the top global economy, does that also
mean that Mandarin will replace English as the world’s new lingua franca? While the
question may have some logic, in the end, the deep-rooted establishment of English
simply has too much of a head start and will continue to hold its position to serve the
needs of international business communication. Multinational companies have wholly
subscribed to this idea and are adopting English in increasing numbers as a working
language to enhance efficiency in a diverse pool of workers. While it has its benefits,
before doing so, having a language management strategy is essential for English language
adoption to be a success due to the incredibly deep ties between culture and language.
Without a strategy, the intricacies of intercultural communication are almost certain to
create unneeded and unwanted obstacles in the management of business operations. |
