Resumo: This paper aims to answer the question: To what extent do the Portuguese emigrants who left after the economic and financial crisis differ from those who left before this turning point? To fulfil this purpose, it is covered some literature on the impacts of this crisis on international migrations as well as some theories about the motivations that lead to emigration. The empirical component of this paper mobilizes data from a questionnaire survey applied to a sample of about 6,000 Portuguese residents in about 100 foreign countries. The field work took place between May 2014 and May 2015 and was applied in a multi-mode strategy, collecting surveys online and in paper-and-pen format. Several characteristics of the respondents are compared taking into account the year of departure from Portugal: before 2008 or after 2009. Furthermore, official statistics are also used to better corroborate the arguments.</description>

Resumo: Higher education is a mainstay in the development and support of the economic, social and cultural development of the global society. Throughout history, academic institutions have sought to respond to the demands of endlessly changing and evolving environmental conditions. However, in the 21st century, a number of significant factors are changing the higher education landscape and challenging higher education institutions (HEIs) to interpret the vital needs of contemporary society to stimulate and enhance student development. Student development is an all-embracing concept that involves research focusing on students from recruitment to placement. Assuming that meeting student needs and stimulating and enhancing their development are crucial challenges for higher education institutions worldwide, the article focuses on a national study in Portugal designed to measure students' expectations and satisfaction with their experience. On the basis of a nationwide survey, it examines these in the various types of higher education institutions in Portugal.

Resumo: A conceção do futuro das sociedades contemporâneas como sociedades da informação e do conhecimento trouxe uma revolução tecnológica às escolas. No entanto, a disseminação da tecnologia não obteve ainda correspondência no plano dos usos das TIC em sala de aulas, nos processos de ensino e aprendizagem no ensino secundário. Com base num inquérito realizado a 324 professores de 12 escolas disseminadas pelo país verificamos como as TIC são ainda incipientemente utilizadas nas salas de aulas, reforçando uma abordagem conservadora do ensino. Esta tendência central encerra, no entanto, uma grande diversidade de situações, de acordo com as diferenças entre os recursos tecnológicos nas escolas e com as representações e competências dos docentes.</description>

Resumo: This article discusses the heterogeneity in children's appropriation and use of the internet that make up contemporary digital divides. Based on a survey of Portuguese children in mandatory education (8- to 17-year-olds), it relies on multivariate statistical procedures to build a topological mapping of internet use patterns. Variations in digital practices and parental mediation are analysed in relation to social backgrounds and demographic traits. Four clusters of users were thus identified: 'self-reliant cybernauts', 'nurtured cybernauts', 'nurtured beginners' and 'unguided rookies'. This article aims to contribute to deepening the debate on digital divides and digital diversity within the sociology of childhood.
