| dc.description.abstract | As a rising star, sneakers took their leap in the 80’s, and in their path, demonstrated an outstanding presence in sociological environments and evolving to the stardom of individuality and self-expression, from its practical origins growing into collectible items that hold social, economic, and cultural significance. This propulsion was parallel with the rise of marketing and the internet, with sneakers influencing each generation differently from the 90’s onward. Along the way, sneakers joined different classifications, from fashion to political statements and even entering the Art World. Some people have considered sneakers art since their shift from everyday objects to collectibles, yet it isn’t the matter of discussion in this thesis to argue sneakers as art, rather they will be addressed as collectibles. In fetching millions of dollars in auctions, most scholars agree that this subject still has lacked attention, despite its continual prominence on the Art Market, however overlooked upon, its growth has, until now, understudied parameters. Accordingly, the aims of this research contemplate the analysis of sneakers in the Art Market whilst understanding their rise in this niche market paired with their sociological impact. This will be possible as a concrete timeline on sneakers’ history and path to their appearance on the Art Market will be built, as well as the examination of their influence on consumers and how strong they play in society. Also, an analysis on the rise of sneakers as collectible assets will shed some light on the market dynamics and the weight of institutional recognition. | |
