A XVII Exposição Europeia de Arte, Ciência e Cultura, Lisboa, 1983: “Reapreciar Descobrimentos com olhos postos no futuro”

Abstract

Em 1983, realizou-se em Lisboa, sob os auspícios do Conselho da Europa, a XVII Exposição Europeia de Arte, Ciência e Cultura: Os Descobrimentos Portugueses e a Europa do Renascimento. Equacionada em 1976, a exposição foi concebida, organizada e realizada após o pedido de adesão à CEE e enquanto duravam as necessárias - e intermináveis - negociações. Tendo presente como a memória histórica se ajusta às conjunturas políticas e sociais, em função das necessidades de explicação e orientação do presente, este trabalho procurou avaliar se, e em que medida, é que a evocação dos descobrimentos, numa atualização da sua leitura histórica cultural, procurou, na nova conjuntura, demonstrar o histórico lugar de Portugal na, e a sua mais-valia para a, Europa, aonde nunca deixara de pertencer. A investigação confirma que a perspetiva adotada foi o a de evidenciar que Portugal partiu para os descobrimentos já firmemente enraizado na cultura europeia, e que, ao proporcionar o encontro e ao trazer o “outro” para a Europa, assumiu uma vocação universalista privilegiada, tornando-se natural interlocutor - ontem e hoje - no diálogo entre a Europa e o mundo. Abrindo o caminho para as comemorações que se seguiram, a Décima Sétima foi o primeiro evento cultural que, sob o prisma do “encontro de culturas”, reutilizou o mito da “vocação ecuménica” portuguesa (a especial capacidade para o relacionamento com outros povos, num luso-tropicalismo recondicionado) para alavancar a posição no mundo do Portugal moderno, democrático e - num futuro tão próximo quanto possível - europeu.

In 1983, under the auspices of the Council of Europe, the 17th European Art Exhibition: The Portuguese Discoveries and Renaissance Europe was held in Lisbon. Considered in 1976, the exhibition was conceived, organised and carried out after the application for accession to the EEC and while the necessary - and endless - negotiations lasted. Bearing in mind how historical memory adjusts to political and social conjunctures, depending on the needs of explanation and orientation of the present, this work sought to assess whether, and to what extent, the evocation of the discoveries, in an update of its cultural historical reading, sought, in the particular new context, to demonstrate Portugal's historic place in, and its added value to, Europe, where it never ceased to belong. The research confirms that the perspective adopted in the Exhibition was to show that Portugal set out for the discoveries already firmly rooted in European culture, and that, by providing the encounter and bringing the “other” to Europe, it assumed a privileged universalist vocation, making it a natural interlocutor - yesterday and today - in the dialogue between Europe and the world. Opening the way for the commemorations that followed, the 17th Exhibition was the first cultural event that, under the prism of the “encounter of cultures”, re-used the myth of the Portuguese “ecumenical vocation” (the special capacity for relationship with other peoples, in a reconditioned luso-tropicalism) to leverage the position in the world of the modern, democratic and - in the desired near future - European Portugal.
